National UNV Peace and Cohesion Coordinator

Background

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is the UN organization that promotes volunteerism to support peace and development worldwide. Volunteerism can transform

the pace and nature of development and it benefits both society at large and the individual volunteer.

UNV contributes to peace and development by advocating for volunteerism globally, encouraging partners to integrate volunteerism into development programming, and mobilizing volunteers.

Peace and Cohesion Coordinator Job Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Programme Coordinator the national UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Provide information and communication support to the Conflict Analysis Group (CAG).
  • Consolidating reports from the cluster Peace and Cohesion Coordinators, and additional data, early warning and relevant updates from Peace and Cohesion Monitors, Peace Committees, and partners in the assigned Counties.
  • Prepare reliable, analytical and timely warning reports, situation reports and incident reports, as well as trends analysis in liaison with stakeholders and disseminate information to relevant stakeholders of the UWIANO
  • Platform in a timely manner.
  • Provide a timely daily and  weekly analysis of the electoral process in the Counties, including monitoring reports on issues of violations, Hate speech and political trends.
  • Coordinating the necessary backup support to Cluster Coordinators and their respective County field Monitors and partners.
  • Providing rapid assessment on emerging issues for attention of the national Conflict Analysis Group, the UWIANO Platform for Peace for action.
  • Ensure conflict analysis are produced and disseminated in coordination with other cluster Analysts.
  • Mobilizing and coordinating stakeholders in the implementation of armed violence reduction programmes.
  • Preparing proposals for funding in support of community peace initiatives.
  • Maintaining an up-to-date database of peace actors at the national, county and sub-county levels including peace committees, COBs, FOBs, NGOs, CSOs among others in respective clusters.
  • Ensure PBCM Directorate website is updated regularly with relevant information, publications and advocacy and peace-building and community security news, events.
  • Strengthening information management and dissemination though social media and other ICT based platforms including Twitter, Facebook, etc.
  • Analyzing research data on peace and conflict management.
  • Maintaining up to date database and reports on peace building and small arms control.
  • Updating Conflict Early Warning and Early Response System, and Information Resource Centres on peace building, cohesion and small arms control.
  • Ensuring active participation and equitable representation of gender, youth and differently-abled persons in local peace structures.
  • Facilitating activities of Cluster County mediation teams.
  • Organizing training programmes on conflict sensitive programming in liaison with stakeholders.
  • Perform any other relevant duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor and/or Programme Manager.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:

  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteers Day -IVD);
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
  • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities;
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Results/Expected Output:

  • The Cluster office and mechanism for local coordination, and assessments in place.
  • Early Warning hubs and information management mechanisms established and training of actors utilising this systems trained and adequately resourced.
  • A work schedule and collaborative mechanism with County Governments, Local partners and County Commissioners developed and operational.
  • Learning platforms and collaborative Mechanisms at the Cluster Level   to mitigate risks of election related conflicts and violations established.
  • Contributions to knowledge networks and communities of practice increased.
  • NCIC and NSC county level monitoring and reporting mechanisms and response to issues of hate speech and political violations strengthened.
  • Gender and Diversity issues systematically applied, integrated and documented in all activities.
  • A final statement of achievements towards volunteerism for development during the assignment, such as reporting on the number of volunteers mobilized, activities participated in and capacities developed.

Peace and Cohesion Coordinator Job Competencies

  • In-depth knowledge of the political, social and conflict dynamics of the Clusters, including fluency in the local language(s), cultures and traditions.
  • Proven experience in stakeholder coordination, especially in the contexts of UN and development institutions.
  • Strong interpersonal relations and communication skills; including ability to prepare clear and concise reports; ability to conduct presentations, articulate options and positions concisely.
  • Creativity and adaptability to work environment and in delivering results in a timely manner.
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and willingness to operate independently in austere, remote environments, including possible extensive travel within the area of operations; willingness to transfer to other duty stations within area of operations as may be necessary to attend to urgent issues.

  • Genuine commitment towards the principles of voluntary engagement, which includes solidarity, compassion, reciprocity and self-reliance; and commitment towards the UN core values.

Required Skills and Experience for Peace and Cohesion Coordinator Job

  • A University degree in the Social Sciences, Political science, conflict studies, Management sciences.
  • At least 2 years substantive experience in conflict analysis, and coordination.
