The Health Support Organization (THESO) is a registered South Sudanese based charity non-profit organization dedicated to saving lives and relieving suffering through humanitarian and developmental programmes.

THESO a private, voluntary, non-political, non-sectarian organization was formed in 2005, and incorporated in 2008 by South Sudanese doctors to support the national efforts in addressing health challenges in South Sudan.

Our mission is to implement evidence-based, culturally sensitive, innovative projects promoting health, according to perceived public health needs and priorities as understood through quality research. THESO is contributing to government’s efforts in meeting the global strategies 2020 and 2030 meeting Sustainable Development Goals 3 and 6 set targets. THESO respond with healthcare, Nutrition, and WASH services, when people are overwhelmed by natural disaster, conflict or disease and in need of immediate help. We focus on treating those who are beyond the reach of existing health services. After the immediate crisis, THESO stays on to assist recovery. Using our expertise, we support health workers and strengthen existing health services. We build resilience by helping societies at risk of future health disasters, to be better prepared.

Context and Background

THESO five years strategic plan (2016 – 2020) includes expansion of its programme to all states and internationally, deepen its working relationship with host governments partners at all levels, develop a gradual exit strategy to allow the smooth transfer of specific health facilities to MoH, and support affected people with emergency response, recovery, developmental and resilience programmes. The primary focus of THESO programme is integrated primary health care, WASH, and community based and health facilities based management of malnutrition. The special emphasis is given to maternal and child health care services. The programme strategy includes establishment of static and outreach clinics in the IDPs camps and underserved rural areas to ensure access to essential care and building local capacity through a community based outreach component and engage with Ministry of Health at State and County levels in regards to collaboration, coordination and technical support supervision.

The new 2016 – 2020 strategic plan informs THESO to integrate emergency response with early recovery and building resilience and expand country programme portfolio in South Sudan states and internationally. In South Sudan, THESO is working with State Ministry of Health, County Health Department, County leadership, and host communities to consolidate programme quality, improve the community involvement in the programme planning and implementation through a revised community based approach, capacity building of county health department staffs and strengthen the capacity of local health system by increased engagement with the renowned partnership with MoH in regards to support, supervision, training and policy development.

General Description of the Role:

The Nutrition Manager will be responsible for the vision, strategy, design, implementation and management of South Sudan Nutrition Programme working in collaboration with MoH, SMoH, CHD and THESO senior management team in Juba, and directly with the team in the field.

Duties:

Supervise and support nutrition programming activities and technical aspects of this program.

Ensure use of standardized protocols, policies and guidelines, as prescribed by South Sudan Ministry of Health.

Ensure that all nutrition activities are consistent with established best practices.

Ensure appropriate support to the field sites where the program is implemented through regular visits.

Coordinate with the program implementation team to provide UNICEF, and all local stakeholders with programmatic updates.

Review progress of program objectives and targets in collaboration with the project managers.

Monitor evolving needs of the specific communities being targeted and adjust programmatic priorities as necessary.

Review technical aspects of internal and external reporting prepared by programmatic staff.

Provide ongoing training and further technical support to field coordinators and managers and health facilities staff.

Identify opportunities for partnership with external tertiary level health and nutrition institutes in the region, and UN agencies, to increase humanitarian nutrition capacity in the country

Represent THESO in various technical and nutrition advocacy initiatives and partnerships and lead on specific areas of advocacy and representation directly related to humanitarian nutrition programming

Liaise with the relevant external regional stakeholders including donors, learning institutes, UN and NGO representatives identifying opportunities, synergies and partnerships for THESO’s humanitarian nutrition work.

Provide support to country level Nutrition Specialists for humanitarian response including advisory visits as needed.

Provide quality tools and guidelines to country programmes to ensure understanding of high quality programming, operations and advocacy in nutrition programmes

Support country programmes and head office in the recruitment of nutrition staff and ongoing mentoring to support staff development in humanitarian nutrition settings

The position requires a competent and experienced person with the following attributes:

1 -Master degree in Nutrition, international development, Bachelor degree in nutrition science or related field of study with experience in nutrition programming.

2 -At least 3 years of professional experience.

3 -Understanding of global nutrition and child health policy and context.

4 -Strong communication skills at a level appropriate for high level external representation and ability to tailor communications to different audiences

5 -Proven experience in developing proposals for major donors

6 -Experience of contingency planning/emergency preparedness planning

7 -Experience of working with nutrition cluster coordination mechanisms in country and practical understanding of the cluster approach at country, regional and global level

8 -Experience in team leadership and management with highly developed writing skills

9 -Established reputation in the field of nutrition and child health programming.

10 -Ability to train and build capacity of regional-level staff.

11- Strong written and verbal communication skills.

12- Excellent interpersonal skills. Fluency in English.
