East and Southern Africa Sub-region

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME :

To reduce morbidity and mortality due to malaria in the African region.

Description of duties:

Working towards the achievement of MDGs goals and under the direct supervision of the IST Coordinator, the incumbent’s duties shall be to:

  • Facilitate the work of the members of Malaria Programme at IST-ESA level;
  • Develop the programme of work related to the Programmes and Strategic Objectives and ensure its implementation according to plan
  • Conduct implementation of the agreed IST-ESA Malaria Programme of work;
  • Work closely with the Malaria programme of members to ensure implementation at the IST-ESA level;
  • Work closely with other Programmes to ensure comprehensive and integrated technical support to countries within strengthened health systems;
  • Work under the policy and normative guidance of the Regional Programme Manager;
  • Act as first level supervisor of the support staff within the programme;
  • Perform any other duties within his/her competence as may be directed by the IST-ESA Coordinator.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Essential: Medical degree from a recognized Institution;
  • Postgraduate degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Tropical Diseases.
  • Desirable: Diploma in Malaria Control will be an asset

Skills:

  • Proven experience in working with multi-disciplinary and multi national teams.
  • Five years of practical experience in planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating disease prevention and control activities at central level.
  • Excellent knowledge of the strategies for prevention and control of communicable and non-communicable diseases.
  • Proven competency in modern training skills and/or epidemiological surveillance and research.
  • Experience in working with various partners from multilateral and bilateral agencies as well as NGOs.

Experience:

Essential:

  • At least Seven (7) years of practical experience in planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating disease prevention and control activities at central level.
  • Excellent knowledge of the strategies for prevention and control of surveillance and research.
  • Experience in working with various partners from multilateral and bilateral agencies as well as NGOs.

Desirable:

Working with WHO is an asset.

Languages:

  • Excellent knowledge of English or French with working knowledge of the other.
  • Knowledge of Portuguese will be an asset.
  • Annual salary:

(Net of tax)

US$ 67,483 at single rate

US$ 72,467 with primary dependants
