Background Data

The Zimbabwe Youth Council would like to use mobile technology through RapidSMS to provide a forum for opinion and information sharing for youth and adolescents in Zimbabwe. Using a crowd-sourcing approach to initiate an SMS dialogue with registered members, the ultimate aim of the program is to stimulate youth participation and increase comprehensive knowledge among adolescents and young people. Opinion polls are also conducted among the young people and the results shared with partners to influence programming decisions.

Terms of Reference

• Implement and adapt software for use with T4D projects based on requirements documents, functional specs and user stories
• Produce documentation and automated tests
• Oversee quality Assurance
• Develop Data Mining Tools suitable for analysis of the Big Data that is anticipated
• Oversee the development and maintenance of the Zimbabwe SMS platform website
• Provide modification programming for the following projects in the 2013/2014
  work plan, based on real use/user feedback:
  • modifications to and testing of RapidSMS modules for the SMS Platform(primary focus)
  • Maintenance of application and support of users of the SMS platform
  • Maintenance of the hosting server for the SMS platform
  • Provide ongoing maintenance and technical support for Zimbabwe Youth Council that involve ICT elements (mobile, web and hardware devices)
  • Thorough knowledge, understanding of and experience with web design proved through portfolio of designed products

Requirements:

• Outstanding graphic design skills
• Good understanding of new and evolving technologies and digital platforms;
• At least 2 years’ experience in designing visions and layouts for web portals
• University degree or relevant training visions and layout for web portals
• University degree or relevant training and/or experience in Graphic Design and/or
  Web Design
• Develop Systems and module graphical interfaces, web modules, database modules, application reports and statistics, and any software components needed to deliver complete and functional application Systems required by the information Systems
• Perform all necessary software maintenance, including coding, testing, debugging, upgrading and modifications of software.

Specialized Knowledge

• Experience in at least one modern object oriented programming language, especially Python.
• Experience with relational databases
• Experience with mobile technology, especially Android or J2ME
• Capable of deploying and maintaining software remotely on a Linux or UNIX-like server
• Experience developing low-bandwidth applications in challenging work environments
• Willing to travel (sometimes on short notice) and develop software in the field, directly with end users.
• Residence in Zimbabwe
