Background
Knowledge management and dissemination is important aspect of UN Women Jobs work and an identified priority area for the Zimbabwe Country Office. The Knowledge Management and Advocacy Consultant/Expert leads and guides the Knowledge Management, research, and gender analysis in wide range of areas related to gender equality and empowerment of women in the Country Office.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Country Representative, the Knowledge Management and Advocacy Consultant/Expert will support and lead the development of a series of knowledge products, in close collaboration with the UN Women Jobs program team and with key stakeholders in government, civil society and United Nations entities in Zimbabwe.
Scope of work, responsibilities and description of the proposed analytical work
Knowledge creation and management
- Undertake the final proof reading, incorporating any suggestions from technical team and government counterparts; and overseeing printing of the following 3 studies: Gender Situational Analysis Study, in partnership with the MWAGCD; Women’s involvement in peace building study, in partnership with the ONHRI; Women’s Experiences and Participation in Constitution-Making in Zimbabwe Politics of Engagement;
- Provide detailed inputs and feedback on advocacy and KM components of the JPGE;
- Proof read and edit any knowledge products, draft news articles, review policy and program briefs internally produced in the CO, prior to distribution/posting to external partners;
- Produce at least 1 newsworthy article, per month, highlighting UN Women Jobs Zimbabwe’s work in local media and in the UN Women Jobs corporate website.
Capacity Building
- Organize and facilitate a training workshop on knowledge management and evidence advocacy for UN Women Zimbabwe staff members and partners;
- Provide technical support to the Zimbabwe Young Women’s Network for Peace Building to produce high quality research document on Gender and Peace Issues at Community Level;
- Provide technical support to the Women’s Coalition of Zimbabwe (WCoZ) on advocacy and knowledge products including support to WCoZ’s communication networks;
- Support program thematic team in the 2013 research activities by producing a checklist to ensure quality assurance and linking research products to evidence based advocacy of UN Women Jobs.
Research and Data analysis
- Produce a concept note monitoring gender in the public sector;
- Produce 8 fact sheets on 2013 Progress in Zimbabwe towards Gender Equality and Women’s Rights;
- Undertake research and write the Zimbabwe 2013 SADC Gender Protocol Barometer, in close liaison with Gender Links;
- Support in proof-reading, data-checking and providing comments on KM products, as requested by the Representative.
Strengthen evidence-based advocacy
- Develop a policy brief on strengthening UN Women’s evidence-based advocacy, building on best practices and lessons learned, including network of community of practices;
- Produce a concept note on gender sensitization and awareness of media. Facilitate 2 sensitization workshops for media;
- Provide substantive support for UN Women’s preparation and positioning for major UN interagency and intergovernmental events, in close collaboration with the Communication Specialist.
Resource Mobilization:
- Produce a fund raising proposal on strengthening UN Women Jobs Zimbabwe’s knowledge generation and information (2013-2014;)
- Review UN Women fund raising proposals and make suggestions/inputs to ensure budget allocation for information/knowledge-related work;
- Flags opportunities for funding for knowledge management.
Deliverables
- Develop a work plan to achieve the deliverables within the first 3 days of the consultancy, in agreement with the Representative;
- Proof read three studies and oversee publications: Gender Situational Analysis Study, in partnership with the MWAGCD; Women’s involvement in peace building study, in partnership with the ONHRC; Women’s Experiences and Participation in Constitution-Making in Zimbabwe Politics of Engagement;
- A fund-raising proposal, ‘Gender Equality and Women’s Rights Knowledge Generation and Information, in line with UN Women format;
- Produce 2 newspaper supplements;
- Eight (8) Fact sheets on 2013 Progress in Zimbabwe towards Gender Equality and Women’s Rights;
- A concept note on monitoring gender in public sector, including production of monthly e-news;
- Produce a concept note on gender sensitization and awareness of media;
- Hold 2 gender sensitization and awareness workshop for editors and reporters of radio, television and print media
- Provided detailed inputs and feedback on advocacy and KM components of the JPGE;
- Proof read and edited knowledge products, drafted news articles, reviewed policy briefs produced internally by program team and/or communication officer, prior to distribution/posting to external partners;
- Produced at least 1 newsworthy article, per month, highlighting UN Women Zimbabwe’s work in local media and in the UN Women Jobs Corporate website;
- Provide technical support to UN Women partners on advocacy and knowledge products and communication networks, in particular WCoZ communication networks;
- A checklist on quality assurance for UN Women Zimbabwe KM Products and linking research products to evidence based advocacy;
- A published study on gendered security issues in rural areas, in partnership with a young women’s organization.
- Published manuscript on Zimbabwe 2013 SADC Gender Protocol Barometer;
- Review and provide technical feedback to partners KM products, who will use UN Women logo in their KM products;
- Reviewed advocacy component of partner projects and provided detailed feedback in writing;
- Convening and facilitating of 2 Gender Forum meetings;
- Research, compile and produce the Zimbabwe Barometer 2013, in close partnership with Gender Links;
- Facilitated a workshop on knowledge management and evidence advocacy for UN Women Zimbabwe staff members and partners;
- Performed any related tasks as requested by the Country Representative.

Required Skills and Experience
Education:
- Masters Degree or its equivalence in development related disciplines, international relations, development studies or other social science fields.
Experience:
- 10 or more years of practical work experience in communication, advocacy for policy reform, work with media research and training in Zimbabwe and in Southern African region;
- Extensive experience as a trainer and facilitator and researcher on gender sensitive communication and evidence advocacy and lobbying;
- Experience in working UN, international organizations and/or research and training institutions, media houses, with specific emphasis on gender equality and women’s empowerment, with prior working experience with UNWOMEN is an advantage;
- Demonstrated hands-on experience as a professional writer, researcher, editor, and documentation of best practices, development of knowledge products and advocacy materials and tools in the field of gender and women’s rights issues in southern Africa;
- Published international standard articles, papers, manuscripts etc on gender and women’s rights;
- Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages, experience in handling of web based management systems;
- Strong field experience on media, journalism, professional editing, excellent oral and written skills, strong research and fact-checking skills.
Language:
- Written and oral proficiency in English is required;
- Knowledge of one of the other UN working languages is highly desirable.
