Opportunity

Abt Associates seeks a Project Assistant / Entomological Database Officer to support the International Health Division. A Project Assistant (PA) supports one or more Technical Specialists and/or the Project Director in carrying out technical project work. Typical duties at this PA level include documenting project activities, setting up and maintaining project files, drafting reports, preparing statistics, translating simple documents, preparing training materials, and making conference logistical arrangements. He or she provides information gathering, research, and related services of limited and intermediate scope and difficulty.
The USAID-funded Africa Indoor Residual Spraying 2 (AIRS 2) Project supports the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI), in planning and implementing IRS programs with the overall goal of reducing the burden of malaria in Africa. PMI assists the National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) of the Ministry of Health and Child Care access to technical expertise, and implementation of IRS in countries affected by malaria. Zimbabwe became a PMI focus country in 2011 and is supported by AIRS to conduct malaria vector surveillance nationwide and strengthen laboratory capacity to analyze specimens to guide vector control.

Under the supervision of the AIRS Technical Manager, the Entomological Database Officer will closely interface with the NMCP Data Manager to coordinate and oversee the building and management of the national entomological data base which will feed into the main national malaria data base at NMCP.

Key Roles and Responsibilities
Manage a national entomological database.
Adhere to the Standard Operational Procedures for database management.
Ensure regular data uploading into an online database.
Design database queries for data analysis and reporting.
Standardize entomological data entry and reporting forms.
Use built-in forms and reports in a database.
Coordinate with partners on submission of data for uploading to the entomological database.
Provide quarterly reports in collaboration with partners regarding entomological data sharing.
Train others on quality data collection, management and use of entomological database when required.
Participate in other field activities as required.
Perform any other duties assigned by the Country Technical Manager in collaboration with the NMCP Data Manager.
Preferred Skills / Prerequisites
Bachelor degree in Informatics, Statistics, Data Base Management and Analysis.
Degree in Biological Science, Environmental Health, or Public Health will be an added advantage.
Understanding of database design concepts.
Understanding of ability to store and analyze data.
3 years’ eperience in developing and managing an electronic database.
High level of computer literacy (able to run programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel and Access).
Knowledge in GIS and RS is required.
Ability to use database software, writing queries and reports using available tools.
Ability to understand data sources, review and analyze data.
Fluency in English.
Knowledge of mosquito collection and rearing techniques is an added advantage.
Minimum Qualifications
High school and ( 3+ ) years of experience OR the equivalent combination of education and experience.
