Consultant Team Leader MARKET LINKAGES SMALLHOLDER OPPORTUNITIES

Based in Zimbabwe, Harare with extensive and regular travel to the project regions

SNV is a specialized advisory services and knowledge-brokering organisation. We provide capacity development support to local and national organisations at the government, non-government and private sector levels. SNV provides advisory services in the sectors Agriculture, Water Sanitation & Hygiene and Renewable Energy/Climate Change.

INTERNATIONAL ASSIGNMENTS

SNV’s advisory services focus on creating effective solutions with local impact. We work in partnership with a wide range of clients to impact poverty and build capacity worldwide. From bilateral donors such as USAID, AusAID and DFID, to philanthropic foundations and leading corporates, we help our clients achieve their development objectives and make a difference where it matters most.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

We are looking for a consultant to join us in upcoming international DFID project based primarily in Harare, Zimbabwe with extensive and regular travel to the project regions. The Team Leader will be responsible for overall team and programme management and for overseeing technical consultancy, capacity building and training inputs which will improve overall incomes for smallholder farmers in Zimbabwe through:

  • Improving yields achieved and productivity by smallholder farmers for both crops and livestock;
  • Supporting the further development and strengthening of advisory training and information (extension) services provided to smallholder farmers;
  • Further developing smallholder farmer cooperation;
  • Encouraging more effective and affordable input supply services (seeds, fertilisers, machinery etc.);
  • Encouraging the further development of mechanisms for financing smallholder production (such as through banks, SCAs, contracts etc.);
  • Strengthening linkages between suppliers to, and buyers from smallholders and to improve value chain efficiency;
  • Ensuring equal and fair inclusive access for both genders and for all groups;
  • Providing advice and guidance for the development of national policy and programmes for the further development and strengthening of smallholder farm production and marketing;

He/she will provide specific technical inputs as required and as defined and will have ultimate responsibility for ensuring that all project outputs are effectively achieved. He/she will report to the Project Steering Group and Project Director and will ensure that an ethical framework is in place and all workplans, deliverables and reports are effectively completed.

The Team Leader will manage, coordinate and provide guidance to the project team and ensure coordination of international and national consultants. Their work will include preparing consultant ToRs, evaluating work practices, monitoring project outputs and deliverables and ensuring a central poverty and value for money focus. The Team leader will also need to ensure effective communications internally and externally with beneficiaries and stakeholders.

The ideal candidate will have substantial team leader experience in a developing economy and preferably in sub-saharan Africa

Experience of working with DFID, M4P, agricultural commodities/value chain development and on poverty alleviation programmes would be a significant advantage.
