m2m supports a growing portfolio of adolescent-focused HIV, reproductive health and psychosocial activities across its country programmes. The Senior Technical Advisor, Adolescent Health and Positive Youth Development (STA AHPYD), serves as the lead adolescent/youth health prevention and treatment specialist within m2m. Working collaboratively with Head Office and country-based staff, the STA will be responsible for leading adolescent/youth health innovations and providing technical oversight on issues and programmes. The STA AHPYD reports to the Director of Programmes & Technical Support. The position will be based at m2m Head Office in Cape Town, South Africa with local and international travel required.
Key Performance Areas:
Lead programme innovation, including adaptation of evidence- and/or science-based approaches, on adolescent/youth areas at head office and country level.
Provide technical support and guidance to m2m on adolescent/youth health issues.
Oversight of adolescent/youth programming and ensure that project objectives and targets are met.
Identify evidence-based innovative concepts on adolescent/youth health for seed funding, including reviewing these concepts for alignment with global best practices, cost effectiveness, and likelihood of scale-up.
Lead planning, implementation and rollout of new adolescent/youth programme areas.
Provide technical guidance, mentoring and capacity building advice on adolescent/youth issues.
Review and provide quality assurance on m2m adolescent/youth tools and materials developed by country programmes.
Provide guidance on best practices in the field.
Lead review and validation of technical documents, training materials and policy briefs to meet national and U.S. government guidelines, as well as international standards.
Lead internal knowledge management of latest adolescents/youth developments, publications, research studies and other information being undertaken both in Africa and globally.
Participate in professional meetings as appropriate.
Participate in professional continuing education and skills training.
Qualifications and Experience Required:
Masters in relevant field including Public Health or other social science field.
Minimum ten (10) years’ of progressively responsible, professional-level experience on adolescent/youth health issues with at least three to five years’ experience in international or resource challenged settings.
In-country experience in Africa is highly preferred.
Experience with U.S. Government programmes, preferred; experience with multilateral and bilateral donors expected.
Competencies Required:
Demonstrated experience in planning, managing, monitoring and advising adolescent/youth programmes or general health programmes with adolescents/youth being a significant component.
Experience with sexual and reproductive health services and livelihood programmes for young people
Demonstrated ability to transfer technical knowledge and skills and transform attitudes to improve the quality of adolescent/youth health services.
Experience with working with diverse groups of stakeholders such as government, NGOs, philanthropists and private sector partners.
Ability to organise, analyse, interpret and utilise epidemiological studies, programme performance information, and other available quantitative and qualitative adolescent/youth health data.
Ability to work in both large and small team structures, in a participatory and consensus-oriented environment as well as on a peer-to-peer basis.
Strong initiative, self-motivated, self-starter, and an innovative thinker who is intellectually curious and has demonstrated outside-the-box thinking.
Willingness to travel.
