The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center, known by its Spanish acronym, CIMMYT®, is a not -for-profit research and training organization with partners in over 100 countries. Please refer to our website for more information: We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated candidate for the position of Assistant Research Associate in the Global Maize and Wheat Program. This position has a critical role in enhancing the impact of CIMMYT’s work. The position reports to the Senior Maize Breeder.

This position is based at CIMMYT’s Office Harare, Zimbabwe.

The job will involve the following

  • Apply research techniques and procedures of high complexity and specialization in a specific part of the overall project that has been assigned.
  • Assist in the supervision of duties assigned to support staff working in the unit, to ensure the techniques are performed or the crops are developed in compliance with established quality standards and participate in tasks that occur during the different stages of the crop cycle assigned to the Unit.
  • Report tasks performed and report to your immediate supervisor any abnormal situations that arise in the development of the project assigned, for immediate
  • Implement field, greenhouse and laboratory tasks as assigned in the work plan, and collaborate with other teams in order to help achieve the objectives of the unit as well as global maize program.
  • Contribute to the training and updating of knowledge and research techniques to the rest of the staff working in the unit and contract workers, and keep updated on new research and implement and attend off-station operations and other CIMMYT field trials and/or research stations.
  • Keep a check on inventories of products and materials used and request a replacement when required and verify that equipment and facilities are in good operating condition and report any maintenance needed to your immediate supervisor.

Required academic qualifications, skills and attitudes

  • Bachelor degree in Agronomy or equivalent and thorough knowledge of the field of work or specialized equipment and a minimum work experience of 2 years in Maize Breeding and Agronomy.
  • Basic knowledge of supervision and/or operating protocols and procedures of research support function and fluent in English and local languages and ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.
